An Eastern Impression: Paintings in various media by Wendy Yeo
(4th January – 23rd April 2006)

A selection of paintings in various media by artist Wendy Yeo will go on display at The Museum of East Asian Art, Bath on 4th January 2006. The exhibition An Eastern Impression provides an electrifying mix of traditional Chinese brushwork and Western ideas, inspired by nature, landscapes and cityscapes.

Born in Hong Kong, Wendy Yeo studied traditional Chinese painting techniques from a very early age. In moving to England when she was seventeen Wendy furthered her art training by studying at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. After graduating Wendy received numerous awards for her art and also won a travelling scholarship to Italy and France. The mix of cultures Wendy encountered in these early stages of her career still motivates and continues to inspire her work. Combining the individuality of Western art values such as form, light and colour together with her own interpretation of traditional Chinese brushwork, Wendy captures beautifully the natural energy within specific spaces.

Chiefly known as a semi-abstract painter, Wendy's work is inspired by landscapes, cityscapes and organic forms in nature. Having travelled throughout Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America, Wendy is particularly attracted to cityscapes which encompass water. The colour of the buildings, their reflections in the water and various changes of light through the day, encourages Wendy to exploit the natural vigour of these unique environments. Maintaining these thoughts within her images of natural forms, Wendy also depicts plants, trees, rocks as well as lakes and waterfalls within her pieces. Combining movement and space through mixed media, Wendy's vibrant work accomplishes an ideal fusion of East and West. Wendy has previously exhibited in the UK and abroad. The exhibition is on show until 23rd April 2006.
