<p><em>Machiya</em> townhouses are found mainly in central Kyoto, the old capital of Japan.  This illustrated lecture will cover a variety of different types of <em>machiya</em> as well as provide an overview of the unique architectural features specific to these charming homes. This type of house also provides insight into the the lifestyles of Kyotoites from the past to the present. Pauline Chakmakjian is a trustee of the Japan Society of the UK and founder of The Japan Room. She has previously live d in <em>machiya</em> in Kyoto.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Monks from the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in India will be visiting to showcase to visitors Tibetan Buddhist art. Along with a small exhibition of thangkas (painted scrolls depicting Buddhist iconography), they will be demonstrating butter sculpting or Torma, the tradition of sculpting offerings from coloured butter. The offerings are not meant to be permanent, but represent the transiency of the world.</p>
