East meets West family fun drop-in origami workshop. 
Over three days the Museum of East Asian Art will be at the Assembly Rooms creating an origami version of Bath! Come help us make some of Bath’s buildings, and make origami houses to take home too!

Cost: FREE – Drop-in workshop at the Assembly Rooms (opposite the Museum of East Asian Art).

Machiya townhouses are found mainly in central Kyoto, the old capital of Japan.  This illustrated lecture will cover a variety of different types of machiya as well as provide an overview of the unique architectural features specific to these charming homes. This type of house also provides insight into the the lifestyles of Kyotoites from the past to the present. Pauline Chakmakjian is a trustee of the Japan Society of the UK and founder of The Japan Room. She has previously live d in machiya in Kyoto.

Monks from the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in India will be visiting to showcase to visitors Tibetan Buddhist art. Along with a small exhibition of thangkas (painted scrolls depicting Buddhist iconography), they will be demonstrating butter sculpting or Torma, the tradition of sculpting offerings from coloured butter. The offerings are not meant to be permanent, but represent the transiency of the world.

Family Fun:  Help us commemorate the upcoming visit of the Tashi Lhunpo monks by learning how to make your own Tibetan prayer flags and thangkas (miniature Buddhist paintings).

Museum Curator Michel Lee will host this fascinating handling session with a chance to get hands-on with some of the jade, bamboo and horn carvings in the museum’s handling collection.  Participants are also invited to bring along their own piecces to find out more about them.

Family Fun:  Create your own Manga adventure storyboard with the museum as a setting.

Enjoy our family friendly, self-guided learning tour of the Museum with an archaeological theme.  Whether you are or not a budding archaeologist, you are sure to enjoy this fun exploration of the Museum’s collection!

Drop in:  The MEAA is pleased to open their Education Room once more as a family activity area, this time with an archaeological theme.  Take part in the various activities and learn fun facts about archaeology and the Museum’s collection.

 Discover the unique beauty of Japanese aesthetics.  Japanese embroidery is stitched on pure silk fabric, either kimono silk for light designs or heavy plain or metallic obi silk for rich designs with superimposed stitching.  Over this weekend the Japanese Embroidery Guild will be exhibiting and demonstrating one of the most beautiful forms of surface decoration for visitors to the Museum of East Asian Art.
