East Asian Film Festival: Spirited Away
Sunday 12th June
1pm
Spirited Away
(2001, Japan – Anime).
Preceded by a short introduction by Dr Patrick Crogan (Senior Lecturer in Film and Media at the University of the West of England): This introduction to the Japanese anime smash hit will speak about Director Miyazaki’s young heroine and the film’s thoughtful evocation of the ghosts of Japan future and past.
In the middle of her family’s move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches, and monsters and where humans are changed into animals.
Spirited Away won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards (2002), the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival and is among the top ten in the British Film Institute’s list of the “50 films you should see by the age of 14″.
