JUNE 2009

Wednesday 3rd June

Revealing Yoshiwara
5.30 - 7.30pm
Author Gina Collia-Suzuki has had an interest in Japanese art, most especially woodblock prints, since researching the woodblock prints of Kitagawa Utamaro under the guidance of renowned Ukiyo-e scholar Jack Hillier.  Gina devoted herself to the study of Utamaro’s prints, eventually concentrating her research on the specific subjects portrayed in his work which culminated in the publication of her book “Utamaro Revealed” in 2008.

Gina has previously talked at the Museum of East Asian Art on the subject of ill-fated lovers in Utamaro’s prints, focusing on some of the intriguing tales behind some of the images portrayed.

For “Yoshiwara Revealed” Gina will be talking about the women who worked in the Yoshiwara Pleasure Quarter, from the highest ranking courtesans to the lowest ranking prostitutes from the moatside brothels.  She will take a look at the day to day operations of the quarter, its various festivals and celebrations, as well as the men who frequented the area in search of a good time, all illustrated with designs by Utamaro, Hiroshige, Koryusai and other Ukiyo-e artists.
Cost £5 (£4 for MEAA Friends) – please book 5 days in advance.

Haiku at the MEAA
Caroline Heaton will lead a series of Haiku workshops in June.  The

sessions will be inspired by the Museum’s collections, including a short talk and tour with the Museum curator.  The theme will be built upon over the three sessions, however they can also be treated as standalone sessions for anyone wishing to participate in only one class.

After a peripatetic childhood in Europe, Caroline grew up in North London.  She combined a career as a professional librarian with freelance writing as a journalist, reviewer and publisher’s reader.  She is the co-editor, with Christine Park, of “Close Company – Stories of Mothers and Daughters” and “Caught in a Story – Contemporary Fairytales and Fables”.  Caroline also recently published a Chinese fable for children.  Her poetry appears in “Sparks – New Writing from Bath Spa University” and she currently works as a writer and poetry tutor.

Caroline recently collaborated on a Chinese poetry event at the Museum of East Asian Art with writer and interpreter Yu Yan Chen, for The Bath Literature Festival.  She has also worked with the Museum on previous occasions – leading both Haiku and Renga workshops.
