to the Museum! Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times JUNE 2009 Gina has previously
talked at the Museum of East Asian Art on the subject of ill-fated lovers in
Utamaro’s prints, focusing on some of the intriguing tales behind some of the
images portrayed. For “Yoshiwara
Revealed” Gina will be talking about the women who worked in the Yoshiwara
Pleasure Quarter, from the highest ranking courtesans to the lowest ranking
prostitutes from the moatside brothels.
She will take a look at the day to day operations of the quarter, its
various festivals and celebrations, as well as the men who frequented the area
in search of a good time, all illustrated with designs by Utamaro, Hiroshige,
Koryusai and other Ukiyo-e artists. Friday 5th June Handling Session 2.00 - 3.00pm In conjunction with our Retrospective exhibitions, Curator Michel Lee hosts this session with the Museum's handling collection. Free with admission – please book 5 days in advance.
Haiku at the MEAA sessions will be inspired by the Museum’s collections, including a short talk and tour with the Museum curator. The theme will be built upon over the three sessions, however they can also be treated as standalone sessions for anyone wishing to participate in only one class. Caroline recently
collaborated on a Chinese poetry event at the Museum of East Asian Art with
writer and interpreter Yu Yan Chen, for The Bath Literature Festival. She has also worked with the Museum on

Tuesday 4th - Sunday 9th August SUMMER ACTIVITY ZONE! Family friendly activity zone in the Museum's Education Room, complete with craft activities and a reading area. Parental supervision required. Free with admission Monday 17th - Friday 21st August ARTS OF EAST ASIA SUMMER SCHOOL ![]() Join us this summer at the Museum of East Asian Art for 5 days of art classes. You will learn about and tackle brush painting, print making and sketch objeccts from the collection. Ages 11 to 16 Cost £25 per child for 5 day summer school Must be booked 10 days in advance Sunday 30th August SHAKUHACHI CONCERT 5.30 – 6.30pm Expert Japanese "flute" player Stephanie Hiller presents this concert of beautifully arranged music to entertain on a lovely summer evening. There will also be a complimentary glass of wine or juice for members of the audience. Stephanie has been playing the Shakuhachi for over 20 years, having started to learn it whilst studying for a music degree at Dartington College of Arts in the 1980s. Over the years the shakuhachi has become a valuable tool in Stephanie's spiritual growth and she uses it as part of the Sound Therapy sessions she offers. SEPTEMBER 2009 Friday 11th September CURIOUS OBJECTS, HIDDEN GEMS 10.00am – 12.30pm Why not bring your curious objects along to the Museum to see if we can identify them. Free with admission - no need to book. Saturday 12th September INK PAINTING WORKSHOP 3.00pm – 4.00pm Drop-in children's workshop. Come grind your own ink, practice calligraphy and try your hand at painting some popular East Asian motifs, such as bamboo and lilies in this fun ink painting session. Cost £5 (£4 for MEAA Friends) – no need to book. Sunday 20th September CHINESE POETRY: MYTH AND LEGEND 5.30 – 6.30pm Poet Yu Yan Chen presents this fascinating hour of poetry appreciation, looking at myths in Chinese poetry, with a selection of readings and observations. Born in a fishing village in China, Yu Yan Chen grew up in New York City and has previously worked as a research analyst on Wall Street, interned for UN Radio, produced a short film and interpreted for Chinese writers in the 2006 and 2007 World Voices Festival. As a translator and interpreter, she writes poetry in pursuit of a balance between her inner struggle and her outer exploration. Her poems have appeared in the New York Quarterly.
