At the Museum of East Asian Art we are continously seeking new volunteers to join our Volunteer Programme.

We offer different levels of involvement, flexible schedules, various opportunities and roles.  The schedules and responsibilities can be adapted to the needs of the Museum and the volunteers.

Front of House

Are you interested in Museums? Do you want to learn more about Chinese and other East and South East Asian Arts and Cultures? We are seeking for enthusiastic volunteers who will like to be part of our front of house team. You will help to create a welcoming atmosphere and provide excellent customer service care to those that call or visit the museum.

 Outline of tasks to be undertaken:

  • To answer the telephone and record all messages, pass on all messages to the relevant contact.

  • To serve customers in the shop

  • Greet Visitors and take admission fees

  • Manage the till and take money

  • Fill in admissions daily record sheet

  • Recording sales in the book

  • Taking Friends membership

  • Stock on shelves

  • Cleaning-Especially dusting on the shelfs and keeping the shop clean

  • To keep the desk area clean and tidy

  • Informing visitors about our permanent, temporary exhibitions as well as the Museum’s programme of events.

  • Provide visitors with gallery guides, calendar of events and Museum related hand outs

  • To handle initial inquiries about group and school visits

  • To take booking information for Museum events and workshops and taking payments


Education Assistant

This unpaid position requires a minimum commitment of one day a week, on either Monday or Tuesday, with flexible working hours which can be fitted to your preference.

This is an exciting role, which will allow you to advance any existing skills, as well as participate in something fulfilling and interesting in your spare time. This voluntary position will require you to be working in the museum and occasionally in schools, assisting the MEAA in developing and sustaining its Education Programme. Consequently the Education assistant will become a highly valued member of the team.

You will be…

  • Support the Education and Development Manager, or workshop leader, in school visitsAssisting with and sometimes leading

  • Family Fun workshops

  • Creating education resources to use for public and school activities, under close guidance and supervision

  • Helping to set up and clear away after events, such as workshops

  • Assist the Education and Development Manager in editing and reviewing the education blog as well as recruiting new blogger

  • Updating the schools contact list on a regular basis, in addition to other administrative duties

  • Support the Education and Development Manager and the Volunteer Coordinator in recruiting and training any new volunteers in that area

  • Contribute to the marketing of new education projects, by contacting schools, updating the newsletter and finding new ways of engaging schools and the public with our education programme
