Wednesday 3rd June

5.30 – 7.30pm

Author Gina Collia-Suzuki has had an interest in Japanese art, most especially woodblock prints, since researching the woodblock prints of Kitagawa Utamaro under the guidance of renowned Ukiyo-e scholar Jack Hillier.  Gina devoted herself to the study of Utamaro’s prints, eventually concentrating her research on the specific subjects portrayed in his work which culminated in the publication of her book “Utamaro Revealed” in 2008.

Gina has previously talked at the Museum of East Asian Art on the subject of ill-fated lovers in Utamaro’s prints, focusing on some of the intriguing tales behind some of the images portrayed.

For “Yoshiwara Revealed” Gina will be talking about the women who worked in the Yoshiwara Pleasure Quarter, from the highest ranking courtesans to the lowest ranking prostitutes from the moatside brothels.  She will take a look at the day to day operations of the quarter, its various festivals and celebrations, as well as the men who frequented the area in search of a good time, all illustrated with designs by Utamaro, Hiroshige, Koryusai and other Ukiyo-e artists.

Cost £5 (£4 for MEAA Friends) – please book 5 days in advance.
