2nd May 2009 – 23rd August 2009

Since opening its doors to the public in 1993, the Museum of East Asian Art has been a beacon of East Asian art and culture in the west of England and houses one of the most remarkable collections of art from this part of the world in the United Kingdom. From the 2nd of May through to the 23rd of August, the Museum will be celebrating a full fifteen years of presenting the art and cultures of East and Southeast Asia to the public with two Retrospective exhibitions.

Treasures of the Museum of East Asian Art

Although the Museum opened to the public in 1993, the core of its collection really began to form in the later 1960s. Treasures of the Museum of East Asian Art celebrates the development of the Museum’s collection over the past fifteen years. It includes some of the earliest pieces purchased by Brian McElney, the Founder of the Museum, some of the masterpieces of the collection, objects gifted to the Museum by various donors, and new acquisitions.

Fish of Plenty: Auspicious Nature in Chinese Art

A collaborative photography project between the Museum of East Asian Art and photographer Simon Ferguson. By looking at individual objects in the Museum’s collection of Chinese art in detail, Simon discovers a world in miniature, of auspicious symbols. Through these symbols, the objects are reinterpreted through photographs and presented from a different point of view than they would normally be experienced.
