Religion and Belief Religion and Belief, an exhibition uncovering the vast array of religions and beliefs found within the diverse cultures of East Asia, opens at the Museum on 23rd August 2005. A range of major world religions are represented within the countries and cultures of East Asia. Not only is Asia the birthplace of Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism, the region is also home to the largest Muslim population in the world, as well as significant numbers of Christians. This exhibition explores the main philosophies of some of these established religions as well as the co – existence of other indigenous faiths. The exhibition also takes an extensive look at traditional myths and folklore that contribute to today's vibrant belief systems in East Asia. Themes include the veneration of nature and natural phenomena, the importance of ancestors and burial practices as well as ideas about destiny, luck and fortune. The objects on display range in date from the Shang Dynasty (1600 – 1100 century BC) to the present day and highlight a wealth of religions and complex belief systems which exist within East Asian cultures.
