SHEN: Chinese Icons of Divinity SHEN is the Chinese word for the divine or spiritual being, for which there is a numerous array in the Chinese pantheon: from Guandi, the god of loyalty, to Fuxing, the god of happiness. The exhibition ‘SHEN: Chinese Icons of Divinity’ will explore the carved wooden images found in Chinese temples and on household altars, both within China and in Chinese diaspora communities, and what the gods and deities mean to devotees. The majority of the objects on display are from the collection of Keith Stevens, a long standing researcher who has had several publications on Chinese gods and contemporary Chinese popular religion. They were collected by Mr. Stevens from 1940 until 2000 in China and in Chinese communities throughout Southeast Asia. This exhibition will be held at the Museum of East Asian Art in conjunction with CHINA NOW, the largest celebration of China and Chinese culture ever to take place in the UK.
