Chinese Whispers: New works by Rebecca Yue
5th January – 17 th April 2005

A selection of new work by local Chinese artist Rebecca Yue will go on display at the Museum of East Asian Art on 5th January 2005. The exhibition Chinese Whispers: New works by Rebecca Yue, will include intricate papercuts, brush paintings and examples of calligraphy, based on popular Chinese motifs as well as contemporary subjects.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Rebecca was drawn to Chinese art from a very early age. When she was just eleven, Rebecca started studying brush painting and from the age of fourteen, she began her training in the traditional art of Chinese calligraphy. Since moving to England in 1971, Rebecca has devoted all her time to perfecting these ancient art forms as well as practising other Chinese art forms such as papercutting, knotting and silk painting. Deeply attracted to the unique characteristics of simplicity, grace and elegance in Chinese art, Rebecca aims to preserve such qualities in her own work.

However Rebecca's blend of Chinese tradition in her work is very unique. Feeling unhampered by ancient formats or techniques, Rebecca constantly works hard with bold experimentation to look for new ways of expression. As Rebecca suggests, “It is not good enough to merely replicate what has been achieved in the past, something new must be created for Chinese art to continue to flourish”. Leading the way in new techniques and fresh inspiration, Rebecca effortlessly bridges the past with the present and the east with the west.

As well as being an established tutor, Rebecca is also passionate about passing on her knowledge and enthusiasm to others. She has recently produced two new step-by-step books, “Chinese Calligraphy Made Easy” and “Chinese Flower Painting Made Easy”. Both books are available from the Museum Shop.
